Designer duo Shyamal & Bhumika continue to weave stories of heritage and nostalgia through their couture, and their latest collection — ‘Haveli’ — is no exception. Inspired by the duo’s centuries-old ancestral home nestled in the old pols of Ahmedabad, this exquisite edit transforms architectural splendour into pieces of wearable art.
The havelis of Ahmedabad, known for their jaali-filtered courtyards, hand-painted frescoes, carved balconies, and lime-washed walls, have long stood as symbols of artistry and memory. With Haveli, Shyamal & Bhumika capture this poetry of their roots — transforming fading textures and forgotten details into contemporary couture that celebrates the soul of old Ahmedabad.
Haveli: A poetic tribute to heritage
Every piece in the collection narrates a story. Sequins, glass beads, and crystals mimic the shimmer of antique mirrors and the glow of the afternoon sun falling on timeworn walls. The designers have created a delicate balance between pastel serenity and royal opulence, blending hues like dusty rose, powder peach, mint, almond, and oxidised gold with jewel tones of ruby, rani pink, forest green, and indigo.
Silhouettes range from panelled bridal lehengas and kalidaars to shararas, saris, and structured sherwanis, each piece revealing intricate embroidery reminiscent of zardozi, resham, and mirror work. Draped veils and sculpted blouses add a regal yet intimate charm — echoing the layered beauty of a haveli itself.
Memory as muse
Recalling their creative process, Shyamal shares, “Walking through the haveli as children, we were always enchanted by its textures — the sun-faded frescoes, jaalis casting patterned shadows, and carved balconies telling stories of peacocks and sacred symbols. For this collection, we reinterpreted those visuals into embroidery, motifs, and silhouettes. A fresco becomes a pastel palette of dusty rose and mint; a jaali becomes an heirloom-inspired veil; carved balconies find new life in zardozi and resham work. It’s our way of turning memory into wearable history.”
