Designer Anurag Gupta’s latest collection, An Ode to Hokusai, is a poetic fusion of fashion and fine art. Drawing inspiration from the legendary Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai, the collection translates his fluid brushstrokes and serene landscapes into structured, sculptural garments.
Comprising 17 ensembles, the edit stands out for its architectural silhouettes—exaggerated shoulders, precise tailoring, and clean lines—all rendered with Gupta’s signature sense of bold minimalism. The designer’s technical mastery shines through in intricate jacquards, artisanal knits, and appliqué detailing, developed in collaboration with skilled craftspeople.
The colour story pays tribute to Hokusai’s most famous works: indigo and oceanic blues evoke the depth of the sea, while muted neutrals and coral accents reflect the harmony between nature’s calm and creative power.
Fashion as Dialogue
Speaking about the idea behind the collection, Gupta explains,
“I’ve always been inspired by Japanese aesthetics and craftsmanship. Hokusai’s visual language—the movement, depth, and philosophy—became a starting point. An Ode to Hokusai isn’t about imitation but interpretation through a modern Indian lens.”
He adds that this is his most research-driven and collaborative project yet.
“It’s less about fashion as ornament and more about fashion as dialogue—between art, engineering, and craftsmanship. It carries a sense of calm and restraint that contrasts with the edginess of my previous collections.”
Through An Ode to Hokusai, Gupta redefines contemporary couture as a medium of cultural exchange, proving once again that fashion can be both intellectually charged and visually magnetic.
