Bulgari has opened its grandest exhibition yet in Japan. Named “Bulgari Kaleidos: Colors, Cultures and Crafts”, it unfolds at The National Art Center in Tokyo. After a decade of no major shows in Japan, this is the maison’s most ambitious display here.
A Journey Through Three Themes
First, visitors pass through The Science of Color. Then, they move into Color Symbolism. Finally, they experience The Power of Light. Each chapter highlights how Bulgari crafts its jewels. Also, how art and culture inspire its designs. Moreover, modern works by contemporary artists add depth.
Nearly 350 Creations on Display
Bulgari has gathered nearly 350 pieces. Some are legendary vintage jewels. Others are recent commissions. Among highlights is the “Seven Wonders” emerald necklace. Also 1960s sautoirs. Additionally, early designs by Sotirio Bulgari are exhibited. Meanwhile, new works by artists such as Lara Favaretto, Mariko Mori, and Akiko Nakayama enrich the collection.
Fusion of Italian and Japanese Craft
The “Kaleidos” exhibition doesn’t only show jewels. It also bridges Italian luxury with Japanese artistry. Hence, visitors see lighting, space and materials that reference both cultures. Also, the interplay of colour and form suggests dialogue. Because colour holds special symbolic value in both Italy and Japan. As a result, the exhibition feels like a cultural exchange.
Opening Ceremony & Host of Guests
The launch included high profile events. These were a press conference, a vernissage, and a gala dinner in the museum’s atrium. Also, Bulgari extended its presence to its hotel in Tokyo with activations. Guests included Princess Takamado, Governor Yuriko Koike, and the Italian Ambassador, Gianluigi Benedetti.
