Shades of India Unveils Gulnar: A Pre-Festive Celebration of Suzani Heritage
Shades of India introduces its latest pre-festive collection, Gulnar, a masterful confluence of heritage, storytelling, and contemporary design. The collection features kurtas, pyjamas, salwars, dupattas, skirts, blouses, potli bags, kaftans, and saris, all woven together with a quiet, artistic language—nostalgic yet perfectly modern.
A Love Affair with Suzani Textiles
At the heart of Gulnar lies the brand’s enduring admiration for suzani textiles—rich, embroidered fabrics from Central Asia. Co-founder and design director Mandeep Nagi explains, “The journey of Gulnar began not just with inspiration but with our deep, abiding love for suzani textiles, fostered in over 150 antique pieces collected by David (Housego) and myself over the years.”
These suzanis, historically preserved in exhibitions, are now transformed into wearable art. “Gulnar is a way of bringing our admiration for Central Asian textiles into modern wardrobes,” adds Mandeep.
Modern Expression of Timeless Motifs
The collection reinterprets centuries-old motifs, particularly the pomegranate, symbolizing prosperity, abundance, and life. Each piece is carefully crafted to balance intricate heritage embroidery with lightweight, contemporary silhouettes.
Mandeep notes, “The challenge was in retaining the intricacy and storytelling of suzanis while ensuring the pieces remained light, minimal, and wearable. The appliqué work had to be precise, and every motif had to feel rooted yet relevant.”
Versatile and Wearable Elegance
Gulnar is designed for versatility—perfect for intimate festive gatherings or everyday elegance. Wearers can style the garments simply or elevate them with accessories, making each piece a personal canvas for self-expression.
Ultimately, Gulnar is more than a collection—it’s a philosophy. “This is our statement that tradition and modernity can coexist beautifully,” says Mandeep. “It is a rooted, honest, and timeless collection, inviting wearers to carry history in a new-age voice.”
