This year’s Lakmé Fashion Week, one of India’s most influential style platforms, did more than showcase seasonal couture. It marked a bold shift in bridal and festive design. Held for the winter-festival season, the event spotlighted wedding-centric fashion with more flamboyance than ever before.

Design houses across the spectrum embraced the festive moment—saris, gowns, lehengas, tailored suits—with bold touches such as heavy sequins, draped fabrics and dramatic silhouettes. Even men’s wear followed suit, adding unconventional sparkle into traditionally muted wardrobes.

Sequins and Textures

Typically, wedding-season designs lean on pastels and minimal embellishment. However, this edition flipped that expectation entirely. Designers flooded the runway with deep colour palettes—black, emerald green, sapphire blue, wine—and paired them with fabrics like velvet, silk and net, enriched with sequins.

The detailing went beyond mere sparkle: intricate floral sequin motifs, geometric sequin embroidery on net, and contrast juxtaposition of solids with heavy work created vivid impact. Whether it was a net blouse with sequined overlay the runway buzzed with ornamentation.

Dark Shades and Modern Drapes Lead the Way

Contrary to expectations for a winter wedding collection to lean lighter or pastel-based, designers leaned into dark, dramatic shades. Black emerged as a prominent favourite—even for seasons traditionally reserved for lighter tones. These dark hues coupled with innovative draping styles: off-shoulder tops, single-shoulder silhouettes, dramatic sleeves.

Especially notable was the use of drape elements in lehengas and gowns—fabric artfully wrapped and folded, sometimes reminiscent of Western dress forms, yet grounded in Indian stitching. The drape became a design feature rather than just a traditional accessory.

Wearability Meets Style: A New Focus

What set this season apart was how conscious the designers seemed about wearability. While the runway features bold volumes and heavy work, many pieces are created with a consumer mindset—reflecting durability, versatility, and practical elegance. Sequins didn’t just adorn showpieces; they appeared on smart blouses, structured jackets, even men’s suits.
