In 1992, Valaya launched his eponymous label, marking a significant moment in Indian fashion. A graduate of the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), he envisioned a brand that married India’s royal heritage with contemporary silhouettes. Thus vision was encapsulated in the creation of the ‘Diasun’ motif. Thus, a distinctive emblem that served both as a signature and a safeguard against imitation.
Crafting Narratives Through Couture
Valaya’s collections, such as Alika, Rumeli, Tabriz, and Muraqqa, were more than mere fashion statements; they were artistic journeys. Drawing inspiration from art, architecture, photography, and royal memoirs, these collections transformed garments into heirlooms, each piece telling a story through intricate embroidery and textiles.
Reinvention and Global Reach
In 2019, Valaya made a grand comeback at The Imperial Hotel, New Delhi, signaling a reinvention of his brand. This resurgence led to the launch of JJV.Kapurthala in 2022. However a bridge-to-luxury prêt line inspired by the cosmopolitan ruler Maharaja Jagatjit Singh of Kapurthala. This line offered crisp tailoring and relaxed luxury, reimagined for travel and everyday wear, making Indian fashion accessible to a global audience.
The World of Valaya: An Immersive Experience
Further expanding his vision, Valaya unveiled ‘The World of Valaya’ in Delhi Aerocity, a 12,000 sq. ft. flagship concept store. This immersive space housed couture, JJV prêt, furniture, and Valaya’s own photography, reflecting his multifaceted creative vision. Overall success of this venture led to the establishment of eight stores across key cities in India.
