Fashion designer Shravan Kummar has launched his latest collection with a clear purpose: honouring the six-yard drape and celebrating India’s textile legacy. According to an interview in The Hindu, the collection pays tribute to under-acknowledged fabrics and artisans, rather than chasing trends.
He explains that the saree is more than an outfit—it’s “sacred”, laden with tradition, layering and emotion. He notes that its form and versatility make it one of the most enduring garments in Indian fashion.
The Saree as Heritage and Expression
According to Kummar, the saree is deeply into India’s cultural fabric—its drape, its flow and the way it embraces the body all carry meaning. He draws a connection between the saree worn by deities in iconography and the worn reality of the garment in everyday and celebratory life.
Moreover, he points out that we often overlook how the saree once transcended gender and geography: “In ancient times, both men and women draped it with equal grace,” he says. That historical depth enriches his design philosophy.
A Focus on India’s Underrated Textiles
Kummar highlights that India is home to innumerable textile traditions—many craft techniques, regional weaves and fabric styles remain under-celebrated. His collection intentionally brings these into light.
He shares that for a recent collection, natural dyeing techniques were employed from mythology and nature. He argues these crafts deserve global recognition
