Sustainable materials innovator Cultivated Biomaterials has announced plans to launch a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter for what it claims will be the world’s first cultivated leather jewelry line, marking a novel intersection of biotechnology and ethical fashion.
The projects centres around cultivated leather — a bioengineered material produced from real animal cells but grown in lab environments instead of being sourced from traditional livestock processing. In this case, the material starts from the skin cells of a cow named Angel, who resides at the Sweet Farm sanctuary in New York. Using a patent-pending technology platform, the company grows leather tissue in scalable bioreactors, guided by sustainable plant-based scaffolds and animal-free cell culture media, and then finishes the material through a vegetable-tanned, non-toxic, and plastic-free process.
The jewellery brand created from this material will be marketed under the name “Angelry” — a blend of Angel and leather — and aims to appeal to luxury goods consumers who seek innovative, eco-conscious alternatives to conventional leather accessories. Because it involves cultivated material, the product does not require the same regulatory approvals as cultivated meat products, easing its path to market once the crowdfunding campaign goes live.
This initiative reflects a broader trend in fashion and materials science, where lab-grown alternatives — from textiles to leather substitutes — are gaining traction for their potential to reduce reliance on animal agriculture and lessen environmental impact compared with traditional leather production. Sustainability advocates and innovators alike are watching as cultivated biomaterials move from food to fashion and accessories, pushing the boundaries of biotech-driven consumer goods.
