  • Swami Hastkala Gruhaudyog: Turning Waste into Wealth with Creativity

From humble beginnings to becoming a celebrated business icon, Sangita Mukund Nagwanshi has carved a unique path in the world of handcrafted furniture and handicrafts through her enterprise, Swami Hastkala Gruhaudyog. Her story is one of self-motivation, creativity, and dedication, inspiring countless women across Maharashtra.

From Household Challenges to Entrepreneurial Drive

After completing her Marathi shorthand examination with first-class distinction, Sangita was actively searching for a job. However, life’s course changed with her marriage and the birth of her first child. Like many women, she became primarily responsible for household duties and childcare.

In 1995, seeking to contribute financially and overcome family circumstances, Sangita joined her family’s small shop, Swami Electrical and Repairing. There, she learned switchboard cutting, fitting, and wiring, gradually developing a hands-on understanding of her craft while balancing home responsibilities and childcare — all without hiring any external help.

    Turning Waste into Creativity

Sangita’s ingenuity soon transformed into a profitable venture. Instead of discarding leftover plywood from the shop, she began crafting small toy sofas, dining tables, chairs, and kitchen stands, gifting them at weddings. One significant creation was a Lord Krishna throne (Sinhasan), made from leftover plywood, satin, lace, and decorative embellishments, which received widespread admiration.

Encouraged by the response, Sangita began designing decorative thrones in shapes like peacocks, swans, and elephants, combining intricate assembly with velvet and lace finishes. She launched her first small exhibition, showcasing 10–12 unique designs, marking the foundation of Swami Hastkala Gruhaudyog.

    Expansion and Community Empowerment

With growing demand, Sangita expanded her enterprise, sourcing scrap plywood and broken furniture, even procuring materials by mini-truck from Jalgaon. She provided employment to local women, assigning tasks like lace attachment and finishing touches for the thrones.

Her business now reaches cities like Khamgaon, Shegaon, Akola, and Jalgaon, and she sources raw materials like velvet, lace, and decorative patches from wholesale markets in Jalna, Jalgaon, Mumbai, Surat, and Indore. Alongside her throne-making business, she also runs the shop’s electrical spare parts supply, supporting her husband’s work.

Diverse Product Line and Social Commitment

Swami Hastkala Gruhaudyog has diversified into wedding and religious items, festive snacks, and handcrafted bags from discarded fabric, providing sustainable employment for women. The shop also produces puja essentials, artificial flower bouquets, bath and cleaning products, and food items for fasting, reflecting Sangita’s philosophy of “turning waste into wealth.”

Sangita has successfully balanced her enterprise with family life, raising two sons, daughters-in-law, a granddaughter, and a grandson, all of whom actively support the business.

    Recognition and Community Leadership

Apart from her entrepreneurial success, Sangita is deeply involved in social work. She is a proud member of the Somvanshi Arya Kshatriya Lohar community and serves as District Women’s President (Buldhana) of the All-India Somvanshi Arya Kshatriya Federation. For the past 10 years, she has led a women’s self-help group named “Ranragini”, empowering women through skill development and employment opportunities.

Her contributions have now earned her a nomination at the Maharashtra Business Icon Awards, a recognition she describes as the “sweet culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and creativity.”

    A Message of Inspiration

Sangita’s story is a testament to how ingenuity, perseverance, and community support can turn challenges into thriving enterprises. Her journey inspires women to pursue self-reliance, harness creativity, and create meaningful impact while balancing family and social responsibilities.
