While earning returns on investment is a natural aspiration for every entrepreneur, true entrepreneurship reaches its peak when personal success walks hand in hand with social responsibility. One such inspiring example is that of Suryakant Tagad, the driving force behind the respected enterprise Suryakant Furniture.
More than just a successful businessman, Tagad is known for his deep-rooted commitment to society. Through marriage introduction conferences, he has played a key role in facilitating over 800 marriages. His social initiatives also include distributing educational materials to underprivileged children and organizing health check-up camps for the needy.
In recognition of his contributions to both business and society, he was honored with the Maharashtra Business Icon Award.
A Journey of Trust That Began in 1968
The Tagad family hails from Ahmednagar (now Ahilyanagar), and Suryakant Furniture is among the city’s oldest and most trusted furniture firms. The foundation of the business was laid in 1968 by Babanrao Tagad.
Despite having no formal background in carpentry, Babanrao Tagad built his skills through perseverance and hands-on learning. Starting from a small rented space in the Sarjepura area, the business gradually gained recognition for its quality and reliability.
During its early years, the firm undertook furniture projects for reputed establishments such as Hotel Amar, Hotel Yashanjali, and Dr. Chakravarti Hospital, helping establish its credibility in the region.
Passing the Legacy from Father to Son
After successfully running the business for nearly 25 years, Suryakant Tagad joined the enterprise in 1994. From the very beginning, he was involved in every aspect of the business—big and small—instilling in him a strong work ethic and sense of responsibility. He also learned carpentry skills through practical experience.
In 1993, a major milestone was achieved with the launch of a spacious showroom at Ekvira Chowk, Pipeline Road in Savedi, a rapidly developing area at the time. By 2001, Babanrao Tagad handed over complete responsibility of the business to Suryakant Tagad.
Embracing Modern Furniture Manufacturing
While preserving traditional craftsmanship, Suryakant Tagad expanded the business into teakwood (sagwan) furniture manufacturing, gaining specialized expertise in the segment. Furniture crafted by his firm has been used to furnish bungalows and commercial spaces for reputed companies such as Larsen & Toubro and Crompton.
The product range includes sofa sets, dining tables, doors, chairs, wardrobes, and cabinets, which are supplied not only across Maharashtra but also to other parts of India.
Social Service Alongside Business Growth
With business stability came a stronger sense of social responsibility. Suryakant Tagad firmly believes that wealth generated through business ultimately comes from society and must be partially returned to it.
Guided by this philosophy, he became actively involved with the Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Dhangar Samaj Seva Sangh and has been playing a significant role for the past 15 years in organizing state-level Dhangar community marriage introduction conferences.
From Struggle to Sustainable Success
Today, the furniture industry has evolved beyond wood and plywood into a space driven by design, quality, technology, and customer satisfaction. Despite challenges such as limited capital, intense competition, and market fluctuations, entrepreneurs who continuously learn and adapt to change emerge successful.
The journey of Suryakant Furniture stands as a powerful example of how perseverance, innovation, and social commitment can transform a small carpentry unit into a respected brand with lasting impact.

Recognizing his dedication and achievements, he has been selected for the prestigious “Maharashtra Business Icon 2025 / Maharashtra Style Icon 2025 / Maharashtra Fashion Icon 2025” awards.
This honour is being presented by Reseal.in and India Fashion Icon Magazine, celebrating Maharashtra’s emerging entrepreneurs and artists.
