At the New York City Ballet Fall Fashion Gala, worlds of dance, couture, and celebrity merged. Hosted by Sarah Jessica Parker, the gala celebrated new choreography and fashion moments in equal measure. In a striking turn, the evening’s aesthetics spilled off the stage and onto the red carpet.
One of the most talked-about looks was delivered by Julia Fox, who stepped in as a VIP guest wearing Iris Van Herpen’s sculptural design. The dress wasn’t just an outfit — it was a statement in shape, texture, and visual poetry.
The Dress: Sculpture in Motion
Van Herpen’s piece, named “Eclipse,” merged artistry and architecture. It was composed of hand-stitched white spheres, each etched with laser-cut outlines, layered in varying sizes to give both depth and fluidity. The effect: a three-dimensional, floating structure that played with both shadow and light.
Though monochrome in palette, the dress carried rich visual complexity. It “floated down the body in cascading sweeps,” with contours and subtle winged elements reminiscent of Van Herpen’s costume designs.
The interplay of negative space and volume made it feel as if Fox had stepped out of a 3D coloring-book page — bold, abstract, and deliberately ungrounded.
Styling That Amplified the Vision
To match the architectural drama of the dress, Julia’s grooming choices leaned into theatrical minimalism. Her brunette hair was pulled into a neat ballet-inspired bun, with ends dyed blonde and purple.
Her eyeshadow took cues from her hair’s accent tones, bringing cohesion to the look. Thin, sharpened brows added structure, and the overall makeup rested as a complement, not a competitor, to the dress.
For footwear, she chose yellow-green pointed-toe heels, injecting a jolt of unexpected color that contrasted playfully against the structural white of her gown.
