Gadhuli by Sanjukta Dutta Captures the Essence of Twilight

There’s a fleeting moment between day and night — when the sun softens, shadows stretch, and the world glows in quiet suspension. Designer Sanjukta Dutta captured that very magic in her latest showcase, Gadhuli – The Twilight, presented in Delhi.

An Ode to Assam’s Cultural Icons

The show opened with a soulful tribute to the late Zubeen Garg, one of Assam’s most beloved voices. A handwoven sari featuring his portrait and lyrics from his songs became the emotional centerpiece of the runway. It wasn’t just fashion — it was remembrance woven in silk, melody stitched into fabric.

To deepen the emotion, violinist Sunita Bhuyan performed live, offering a moving tribute to Bhupen Hazarika on his birth centenary. The performance filled the space with nostalgia, connecting the past to the present through rhythm, culture, and grace.

“Gadhuli is that delicate moment when all things seem to be in balance — when tradition intersects with evolution,” Sanjukta reflected after the show. “It reminds me of Assam — where nature, craft, and culture exist in harmony with gentle strength.”

    Assamese Craft, Contemporary Expression

The Gadhuli collection unfolded like a cinematic sequence — deliberate, graceful, and hypnotic. Deep maroons bled into midnight blacks, mirroring the hues of twilight. The fabrics shimmered subtly under the lights, echoing the glow of dusk on the Brahmaputra.

True to her roots, Sanjukta reinterpreted the mekhela chador, Assam’s traditional attire, in contemporary silhouettes — merging the charm of handwoven silk with modern forms. The lineup included structured skirts, flowing anarkalis, sharply tailored dhotis, and fluid drapes that spoke of evolution without erasing tradition.

Every piece reflected her signature craftsmanship — intricate handwoven motifs, metallic threads glinting like fading sunlight, and silhouettes that moved like poetry.

    Couture that Breathes Emotion

“Gadhuli” wasn’t about spectacle; it was about emotion. The collection balanced strength with softness, stillness with movement — embodying that liminal space between dusk and nightfall. Each drape told a story of transformation — of the light giving way to shadow without losing its brilliance.

The collection was a dialogue between heritage and modernity, a quiet meditation on belonging and identity. It reminded the audience that fashion, at its purest, can be both art and remembrance — a vessel for memory and meaning.

    A Twilight Reimagined

With Gadhuli, Sanjukta Dutta reaffirms her position as one of India’s leading voices in handloom luxury and cultural storytelling. Her work transcends mere design—it captures emotion, rootedness, and renewal.

Twilight, as she reminds us, is not an ending — it’s a beginning painted in gold and shadow.
