Anamika Khanna Opens Lakmē Fashion Week x FDCI with ‘Silver Collar’: A Luxe Take on Democratic Fashion

    By IndiaFashionIcon.com

For Italian designer Giorgio Armani, denim has long symbolised democracy in fashion—a material that transcends class and culture. Indian couturier Anamika Khanna echoed that spirit as she opened Lakmē Fashion Week x FDCI with her label AK|OK Anamika Khanna, on March 26 at the Jio World Convention Centre, Mumbai.

In association with Lakmē, Khanna presented a “democratic” fashion experience that challenged traditional hierarchies of exclusivity—though with her characteristic irony, it remained an invite-only affair. The conventional front row was replaced by a standing section, dismantling the usual pecking order of fashion week. Designed by creative consultant Nikhil D, the narrow, elevated ramp—bathed in shadow and charged with psytrance beats by DJ and drummer Lis Viegas—evoked a cinematic, Balenciaga-esque mood, perfectly tailored for the Instagram age.

💼 ‘Silver Collar’: Workwear Gets a Couture Upgrade

Khanna’s collection, titled ‘Silver Collar’, explored the everyday rhythm of the white-collar world with her signature playfulness and edge. The collection offered a reinterpretation of power dressing, transforming 9-to-5 workwear into a statement of individuality.

Think long skirts with capes, Jodhpur pants paired with waistcoats, and drop-crotch trousers styled under sharp blazers. The quintessential sari took on a new life as a jumpsuit with a cascading pallu, merging tradition with ease and movement.

💎 Jewels, Chains, and Craft as Conversation

True to the AK|OK universe, jewellery played a starring role. Chunky chainmail skirts, stacked silver cuffs, payals, belts and necklaces cascaded across silhouettes—dripping from shirts, briefcases, and even shoes. Silver jewellery doubled as embellishment, forming pockets and motifs on sheer shirts and tribal-inspired ensembles.

There were echoes of banjara craftsmanship in the stacked cuffs and metallic layering—an ode to India’s nomadic artistry, but styled through a futuristic lens.

    Where Structure Meets Fluidity

Power shoulders met fluid drapery in blazers over dhoti skirts; mirror work shimmered across cutwork tops, ties, and even a supersized suit. The brand’s love affair with blue and denim continued—this time, reimagined with metallic and silver detailing. A special throwback detail? The churidar, subtly peeking beneath a draped skirt, reintroduced with contemporary flair.

The show’s showstopper, Ananya Panday, closed in a spectacular embroidered sari-jumpsuit hybrid, encrusted with jewels and glimmering under the stage lights—an embodiment of Khanna’s vision for the new-age Indian woman: confident, fluid, and unapologetically bold.

    🪞 Fashion for the Future

With ‘Silver Collar’, Anamika Khanna didn’t just present a collection—she delivered a commentary on power, accessibility, and identity in fashion. In true AK|OK style, the designer blurred the line between couture and comfort, between tradition and rebellion, and perhaps most importantly, between exclusivity and inclusivity.

As India’s leading fashion week celebrates its evolution, Khanna once again proved that rebellion can be elegant—and democracy, deeply glamorous.
