Aditi Rao Hydari Revives the Royal Legacy of Wanaparthy Saree
Bollywood and South star Aditi Rao Hydari, known for her graceful style and royal lineage, recently celebrated the revival of the historic Wanaparthy saree, a weave deeply intertwined with her family heritage in Telangana. Sharing glimpses from an exhibition dedicated to the saree on her social media, Hydari described it as a piece with multicultural roots, much like herself.
A Personal Connection to Heritage
Hydari reflected on the influence of her grandmother and mother, recalling a treasured black asharfi saree inspired by a Ravi Varma painting. “I realise now that I was inspired by that saree too. Firmly locked and sealed in my subconscious mind, it all emerged when Sabyasachi created the half saree for Siddharth and my wedding at the Wanaparthy temple,” she shared.
The actress expressed pride in bringing this weaving tradition back into the spotlight, hoping that the skilled weavers of Wanaparthy continue to reclaim and celebrate their rich legacy.
Historical Roots of the Wanaparthy Saree
Hydari’s maternal grandfather, Raja J. Rameshwar Rao, played a pivotal role in nurturing the craft. “He encouraged the weavers, ordered pieces for the family, and shared old designs for them to relearn and recreate,” she explained. The royal family had historically brought Pathani weavers to settle in Wanaparthy, and the craft gradually evolved into its distinct regional style.
Today, the Wanaparthy saree revival not only preserves a unique weaving tradition but also celebrates centuries of cultural and artistic heritage from Telangana, bridging royal history with contemporary fashion.
