At the India Today Conclave, actress Bhumi Pednekar captivated audiences with her sartorial fusion of ’70s floral nostalgia and Victorian accessories, all while embracing traditional Indian draping. Overall her ensemble, a custom creation by Anavila, was styled by Manisha Melwani, showcasing a seamless blend of retro and contemporary aesthetics.
The Ensemble: A Nod to ’70s Floral Nostalgia
Pednekar’s look featured a plaid linen sari in soft purple and muted pink Madras checks, highlighted with zari accents. Thus the sari, from Anavila’s prelude-to-festive collection, providing a grounding contrast to the tailored jacket layered on top. Theerefore jacket, adorned with the label’s signature Luna scallop finish and rose-strewn print, evoked vintage upholstery florals. A Peter Pan collar punctuated with a slim green-and-pink scarf, enhancing the retro mood.
Accessories: A Blend of Aesthetics
The accessories drew from various influences, blending multiple aesthetics. Pednekar wore brooches from Tribe Amrapali, earrings by Moi, and rings from Bijouri. A hair brooch by Golecha Jewels added a vintage touch, while a custom purse by Meera Mahadevia echoed the jacket’s pattern. Striped stockings peeking out from beneath the drape introduced another textural layer.
Beauty Look: Retro-Modern Elegance
Pednekar’s beauty look complemented the retro-modern theme. Her hair was parted to one side and slicked into a low bun, adorned with red chrysanthemums. Makeup featured softly shiny lids, winged eyeliner, flushed berry cheeks and lips, with a small black bindi adding a classic touch.

Vogue India’s fashion associate, Manglien Gangte, suggests that to lean into the uniform-wear charm of the Madras sari with the jacket, one could replace the brogues with a pair of black Mary Janes. Opting for a boxy leather tote instead of the minaudière would elevate the look.
