  • Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar Look Anchored Rich 19th-Century Craft

In the recently released period-inspired action film Dhurandhar, actor Ranveer Singh debuted a striking look that’s capturing attention not simply for its on-screen impact — but for the rich cultural history woven into its design. The costume, a collaborative creation between stylist Smriti Chauhan and heritage brand Divani India, draws inspiration from khillat — ceremonial robes historically presented to royalty, especially in the princely state of Patiala.

    Heritage Reimagined

The centrepiece of Singh’s look is a Shaneel jacket shaped from archival references to a 19th-century Patiala khillat, once proudly bestowed upon the royal family of Patiala. This regal lineage is reinterpreted through dapka embroidery, hand-filled detailing, and zari paani work — traditional techniques that create raised, light-reflecting motifs adapted from the Tree of Life layout of the original garment.

Beneath the jacket, Singh wears a handwoven taupe kurta and moonga-silk trousers, forming a subdued groundwork that lets the intricacy of the embroidered jacket stand out. The styling is completed with a sarpech on the turban and classic mojris, reinforcing the historical aesthetic while fitting seamlessly into the film’s world.

    Craftsmanship Meets Character

Smriti Chauhan’s approach to the look was rooted in storytelling — viewing the costume as an extension of the character’s inner life rather than a mere decorative piece. The design team worked hand-in-hand with Divani to ensure the garment felt organic to Singh’s character and the film’s universe, instead of ornamental for spectacle. This meant considerations like colour palette, embroidery density, and fabric texture all contributed to the visual narrative.

Divani’s creative director highlighted the brand’s long-standing commitment to reviving traditional Indian crafts, noting that this project allowed those heritage techniques to be showcased in a cinematic context. Every aspect of the costume — from silhouette to handcrafted details — was designed to serve the character and story first, ensuring authenticity and depth.

A Look That Anchors Story and Setting

What makes the Dhurandhar costume especially compelling is how it functions as a narrative tool: it signifies character identity, status, and cultural context without the need for dialogue. For viewers, the outfit not only enriches Ranveer Singh’s screen presence, but also evokes centuries-old traditions in a way that feels fresh and meaningful on the modern screen
