Born and raised in the underdeveloped village of Jategaon, Dr. Chavan Rameshwar Haribhau witnessed firsthand the hardships faced by his community, predominantly sugarcane laborers with limited access to healthcare, education, and basic facilities. Despite the village lacking telecommunication, electricity, clean water, and connectivity, Dr. Chavan chose to dedicate his medical expertise to his native area, establishing Sanjivani Hospital in the loving memory of his mother.
Serving the Rural Community
From the beginning, Dr. Chavan provided free or credit-based medical services to the poor, never turning away a patient due to financial constraints. Offering door-to-door emergency care and visiting remote areas, he became a respected family physician while understanding the deeper socio-economic challenges affecting his community.
Realizing that poor economic, educational, and social conditions limited the growth of his village, Dr. Chavan concluded that education was the key to transforming society.
Building a Foundation in Education
Driven by this vision, he established Sanjivani English School in Jategaon, aimed at providing quality education to underprivileged children. The school received overwhelming support and led to the founding of Yamadevi English School in Talkhed village, Majalgaon tehsil. Recognizing the need for higher secondary education, he further established Yashraj Public School and Junior College, offering free education to children of poor sugarcane workers.
Today, these institutions are nurturing 650 students, guiding them toward competitive exams, professional careers, and ethical, value-based living.
Empowering the Rural Economy
Dr. Chavan’s vision extended beyond education. To improve the economic status of his community, he established two financial institutions:
-
Yamai Multiple Nidhi Ltd., Jategaon
-
Yamai Women’s Urban Co-operative Credit Society, Gevrai
These institutions provide immediate financial assistance, loans for education, business, agriculture, and self-help groups, and have become pivotal to the local rural economy. With 7.5 crore in deposits, 6 crore in loans disbursed, and 4,200 satisfied account holders, they have achieved a 98% recovery rate in a short span, earning the trust of the community.
Tackling Social Challenges
Identifying alcohol addiction as a pressing social issue, Dr. Chavan founded the Sanjivani De-addiction Center in Jategaon. Thousands of patients have benefitted, bringing positive social change to the rural demography.
A Collaborative Effort
Dr. Chavan credits much of his success to his wife, Dr. Archana Chavan, along with family, friends, and villagers. Their support was instrumental in transforming his vision into reality, turning a modest medical practice into a network of hospitals, schools, de-addiction centers, and financial institutions.
A Vision Realized
Looking back, Dr. Chavan reflects on a journey from a family physician to a rural entrepreneur and social changemaker. The small initiatives he planted have grown into a banyan tree of education, healthcare, and economic empowerment, positively impacting thousands of lives in Beed district.
