A high-level Indian textile delegation recently completed a five-day official visit to Vietnam with the goal of strengthening bilateral cooperation in silk, technical textiles and broader textile value chains. The delegation was led by senior officials from the Central Silk Board (CSB) under India’s Ministry of Textiles, along with prominent Indian silk industry entrepreneurs.

During the visit, Indian representatives engaged with counterparts in Vietnam’s textile ecosystem, including meetings with the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (VITAS) and the Vietnam Association of Craft Villages (VICRAFTS). These discussions focused on joint efforts to boost handloom and handicraft promotion, product development, export strategies and policy support, highlighting shared commercial and cultural interests.

    Cultural and Industry Immersion

The delegation also visited the celebrated Van Phuc Silk Craft Village near Hanoi, known for its rich heritage in traditional silk weaving, embroidery and design. There, officials and industry leaders interacted with local weavers and artisans to gain insights into Vietnam’s integrated silk value chain — a model that blends traditional techniques with modern market access. Experts suggest that such exchanges could provide valuable learnings for developing similar sericulture-tourism linkages in India’s own textile clusters.

In addition to cultural visits, the Indian group observed modern textile facilities including automated reeling units and mulberry farms, and participated in major trade events such as the Vietnam International Value Chain Exhibition 2026 and the Vietnam Glorious Spring Fair 2026 at the Vietnam Exhibition Centre. India’s presence at these fairs, including a Central Silk Board showcase of Indian silk products, attracted strong interest from Vietnamese and international buyers.

    Goals of the Visit

Officials describe the trip as a key step toward enhanced cooperation in silk and technical textiles — two sectors where both countries possess complementary strengths. India’s robust sericulture base and Vietnam’s expanding textile and apparel production capabilities provide a fertile foundation for collaboration on technologies, skills, and access to regional markets. The visit also involved strategic dialogue on policy alignment, export potential and ways to diversify textile value chains between the two nations.

Strengthened India–Vietnam partnerships in silk and technical textiles could help diversify supply chains, create new export avenues and support broader economic ties aligned with regional trade and development goals. The exchanges also reflect both countries’ interests in mutually beneficial industrial cooperation amid evolving global market dynamics.
